Saint-Tropez

Executed in 1925 en plein air in the south of France, the picture represents a Cubist-like manner of painting. The colour palette as well as the use of bird’s eye perspective seem akin to the landscapes produced by Georges Braque. Still, Gottlieb’s way of depicting nature is unique. Rather than restricting his palette to one tone of green, he applies a whole spectrum of it.

There are swaying palms in the foreground, but the main focus of the painting is on the red roof tiles on the houses in Saint-Tropez. Right behind them, the artist situated the tower of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, an architectural landmark of the town.
